Kannur

Kannur is also known as the Cannanore, which is a largest city of the North Malabar region. The industry of loom is very popular in Kannur, So it is known as the land of looms and lore. The cultural art form of Theyyam is very famous in Kannur. It is having military importance because it accommodates one of the military cantonments of the country and it is the headquarters of the Defense Security Corps and Territorial Army's 122 Infantry Battalion comes under Madras Regiment. Ezhimala Naval Academy is located around 35 kilometers from the Kannur city. It holds 3rd position in world and first in Asia region.

History

In the Middle Ages Kannur has played important role. St.Angelo fort was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy of India named as Dom Franciscoo de Almeida. After 158 years Portuguese rule Dutch came in the power. Finally British people came to India. In 17 the century it was the capital of Muslim sultanate called Arakkal. The gurrilla war of the Pazhassi raja made huge impact in the kannur.
